Film frenzy magazinE (AND MORE)
Wearing many hats, I edited, wrote, designed and artworked issues of Film Frenzy magazine for Eastern Heroes Publishing!
For Issue 2, for instance, I focused on the cult samurai film Shogun Assassin, a movie with an amazing soundtrack that has been sampled by the likes of GZA (from The Wu-Tang Clan) for his album Liquid Swords. This issue boasted an interview with superstar poster artist Jim Evans, aka TAZ, founder of the TAZ collective. Jim talked about his involvement in the development of Shogun Assassin, and spoke about his career in general, including creating posters for movies like Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and his rock poster design work, for bands including Queens of the Stone Age, Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, Pixies, Metallica and the Beastie Boys, and for music festivals like Lollapalooza.
As the Shogun Assassin film can trace its roots back to a seminal Japanese manga comic series, I commissioned talented comic book artist Russell Fox to illustrate the issue’s striking comic
book-style cover.
I ensured the page layouts for the Film Frenzy magazines were always impactful, crammed with imagery, and a thrill to read.
I also edited, wrote, designed and artworked a 'Clones of Bruce Lee' Special Edition magazine for Eastern Heroes Publishing. For this issue I included some images that were comprised of multiple shots of the same actor (shown as different coloured tints) to act as a recurring motif reflecting the fact that this publication focused on the 'cloning'/multiplying of Bruce Lee by many other actors and many other movies.
I even provided (under a nom de plume) some colourful illustrations for various issues, including a full page illo for an in-depth article on the history of Godzilla movies!
